Bots now generate more web traffic than people do – 57.4% of all traffic, according to 2026 data from Cloudflare. Most of that is automated crawlers, but a fast-growing slice comes from AI, bots, and box phone farms.

Box phone farms, especially, can now generate massive volumes of automated invalid traffic using sophisticated proxies and purpose-built software to mask their activity.

A box phone farm is a rack of stripped-down smartphones mounted in a box (hence “box”) and controlled by a PC running automation software. Each phone has its screen, battery, and other non-essentials stripped out, leaving only the core components needed to run.

Operators can use dozens or even hundreds of these box phone farm setups to generate invalid traffic that’s indistinguishable from real users.

Phone farms are what click farms have evolved into: a newer, more sophisticated setup using box phone units dedicated to generating invalid clicks.

Where old-school click farms relied on low-wage workers tapping away on phones, today’s phone farm operations are largely automated. Instead of walls of phones, you’ll find boxed phones stacked in racks, all controlled collectively from a single PC.

The software engineers write the program that controls dozens of phones at once and make it ready for buyers to use. Others work in sales, handling customer calls and following up on leads.

When we look at phone farm operations today, one central theme stands out: AI. Perpetuators have been able to expand rapidly, automate more of their processes, and create harder-to-detect invalid traffic thanks to AI.

Phone farm operators use AI to power everything, including rotating proxies and humanizing bot behavior to evade filters.

Here are the ways phone farms use AI today:

  • Rotating proxies
  • Posting realistic-looking comments
  • Making phone behavior appear human-like
  • Automated account nurturing (“smart account nurturing”)
  • Using AI to post comments and boost engagement
  • Generating social engagements, streaming views, and listens
  • Replacing manual SMM (social media management) labor that previously required human interaction

Rotating proxies are particularly interesting here. Our system recently flagged similar activity on Google Ads campaigns, where a single device clicked from over 87 countries within hours. That kind of location-hopping is a clear signature of proxy use, the same kind phone farm operators rely on.

Tasks that used to require teams are now also entirely automated using AI.

How are these box phone farms built?

Box phone farms are built in three stages.

Stage 1: Assembly

First, each phone is stripped down, with screens, batteries, and any other non-essential components removed.

Each stripped phone is then fitted with a connector linking it to the box’s central frame, which distributes power and internet access and handles cooling.

Box phone setups can either be added to the larger phone farm operation or sold. The design of these boxes have also improved in recent years, and newer builds are less bulky and more efficient than earlier generations.

Stage 2: Network configuration

Once assembled, the box is connected to the internet. Earlier phone farms relied on wired connections, but most are now configured wirelessly.

Stage 3: Automation

In the final stage, a single piece of software automates every device in dozens of box phone units at once. From here, anyone with a box phone farm can use it to stream views, drive engagement, or generate invalid traffic.

This kind of activity used to require human workers manually clicking to avoid detection. Now, the software handles it all.

But more worrying for advertisers is invalid traffic and fake ad clicks. In Q1 2026, our systems detected an average invalid click rate of 16.2% on US Google Search campaigns, with Google’s own filters failing to catch 5.8% of them.

What do phone farms cost advertisers?

Invalid sources of traffic, like phone farm operations, cost advertisers $84 billion annually in ad fraud (roughly 22% of all online spend). This number is projected to hit $172 billion by 2028. Fraud Blocker’s click fraud industry report also found that Google misses more than 5% of all invalid traffic on advertiser ads.

Not all this invalid traffic originates from phone farms, but they account for a significant share, especially given their sophistication and ability to evade anything short of the most advanced detection filters.

How to spot phone farm traffic in your campaigns

Even though it is sophisticated, traffic from phone farms leaves signs. Our system analyzes millions of clicks every month, and we often see large volumes of traffic that fit the pattern phone farms use.

Here are signs to look for:

1. Unusual geographic patterns

You may see an unusually high traffic rate from counties where you don’t do business. Phone farm operations are largely concentrated across Asia and Southeast Asia.

You may also see geographic traffic that doesn’t make sense. An example is one unique device ID appearing from multiple countries within a short period.

2. Inconsistent activity patterns

Your users are awake and active at certain times of the day and asleep at others. But phone farms and the software that controls them don’t sleep. It’s common to see consistent, high click rates with these types of invalid traffic sources.

You may also notice a sharp spike in clicks followed by flat activity. That is indicative of a wave of automated clicks.

3. Repetitive device or OS combinations in your analytics

A box-phone farm tends to have the same type of device. They may link two dozen Samsung S10 devices. Real users, however, use a wide range of devices. If you see repetitive activity from the same device or OS types, that could be a sign of invalid traffic from phone farms.

4. High CTR with low conversion rates

Another sign of phone farm traffic is an inconsistency between click volume and actual conversions. If you see an unusually high click-through rate without a corresponding conversion—signups, purchases, or demos—it’s a signal that something is off.

Real users who click on ads often follow through to complete the journey.

How to block phone farm traffic

Blocking phone farm traffic follows similar principles as blocking other sources of invalid traffic like bots or click farms. Here are the steps we recommend:

1. Exclude irrelevant geographies

If you don’t do business in certain countries, exclude them from your targeting entirely. This immediately removes the most obvious exposure to phone farm traffic.

2. Audit your placements
