The Top Legal Keywords in 2026 (And How to Protect Your Budget)

The Top Legal Keywords in 2026

The legal industry dominates Google’s most expensive keywords list by a wide margin. While most businesses pay single digits per click, personal injury and accident attorneys routinely spend hundreds for a single visitor.

We analyzed 5,000 legal keywords across Google Keyword Planner to find out exactly what keywords firms are paying for, and how much these top legal keywords cost. (see methodology† at the bottom of this article).

The results summarized: The average CPC for the top 100 legal keywords is $142, a staggering 1,493% higher than the industry average of $8.94 reported by WordStream.

Below, we’ve broken down the top 100 legal keywords, analyzed what’s driving these astronomical prices, and outlined how you can protect your firm’s budget from click fraud.

The Top 100 Legal Keywords of 2026

Our data revealed that the most expensive terms are high settlement value keywords related to large vehicles and oilfields, like “tractor trailer accident law firm,” “oilfield injury lawyers,” and ”bus crash lawyer.”

This is consistent with our findings on the most expensive keywords, a list which high settlement value keywords also dominate.

In the table below, you’ll see the top legal keywords sorted by CPC or “top of page bid range,” as Google Keyword Planner (GKP) puts it.

GKP provides two CPC values: The top of page bid (high range) and the The top of page bid (low range). The values below represent the low range.

For more on how this affects the data and why we chose the low range, check our methodology.

Data compiled February 2026. See full Methodology below.

A note on CPC data sources

You may see higher CPCs ($1,400+) cited elsewhere online. These figures typically come from third-party tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush, which estimate CPCs based on various signals. Our analysis uses Google Keyword Planner data, Google’s actual auction insights which shows lower, more conservative CPCs. We believe this represents what lawyers pay consistently, not theoretical estimates and fringe cases.

According to our research, the average CPC for the top 100 legal keywords is $142.  This indicates a “top-heavy” CPC spread as this is 1,493% higher than the industry average of $8.94, according to Wordstream’s data.

The data also shows a tilt towards high intent keywords, especially those relating to injuries and accidents (bus crash lawyer, and tractor trailer accident law firm),

Top legal practice areas with the most expensive keywords

Of the top 100 keywords we identified in this study, the landscape is far more concentrated than expected: Personal Injury makes up the full list, with two subsets, Truck Accidents (37%) and General Personal Injury (25%) making up more than half of the most expensive legal terms in our dataset.

Here are the keywords broken down by practice area:

Top Legal Keywords by Practice Area
Top legal keywords broken down by practice area sub-category, showing percentage of top 100 keywords and average CPC
Sub-Category % of Top 100 Avg CPC
Bus Accidents 2% $330
Scooter Accidents 1% $300
Motorcycle Accidents 7% $192
Maritime/Admiralty 8% $169
Car Accidents 13% $150
Truck Accidents 37% $139
General Personal Injury 25% $118
Premises Liability 1% $111
Construction/Workplace 5% $78
Catastrophic Injury 1% $36
Weighted Average 100% $142

Notably absent from the top 100 are practice areas like family law, criminal defense, estate planning, and even medical malpractice. It’s possible law firms aren’t willing to pay as much for these keywords, since they have a lower overall settlement value than personal injury.

Here’s a visual graph showing the distribution of these keywords, and their CPCs.

Why do legal keywords have such high CPCs?

The top legal keywords data suggests that a lawyer may bid $600+ on a single click for keywords like “tractor trailer accident attorney near me”. And in our experience managing PPC campaigns and blocking fraud, it isn’t far-fetched. The high prices are the result of a combination of factors, including customer lifetime value, competition, and profit margins.

  1. Lifetime value (LTV) & settlement potential: The most expensive keywords, like “tractor trailer accident law firm,” correlate with cases that have high settlement potential. If a law firm spends $1,200+ on clicks to acquire one client, but that client’s case results in a $500,000 settlement, the Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) remains high, and that justifies the spend.

  2. High competition: Thousands of firms compete for a limited number of “above the fold” ad slots on Google, and that drives up the auction prices. Additionally, bigger firms with deep pockets are often bidding on the same keywords as smaller boutiques, and the more bidders are willing to pay, the higher the CPC for that specific keyword.

  3. High profit margins: Law firms operating on a contingency fee basis (typically 30-40% of the settlement) enjoy high profit margins on successful cases. Because they don’t have the overhead of physical inventory, they can afford to re-invest a large percentage of their projected revenue into lead acquisition.

  4. Speed-to-purchase: High CPC keywords are high intent. So, a person searching for “drunk driving accident lawyer houston” is likely seeking immediate legal counsel. This urgency often translates to conversion with fewer ad clicks, and that justifies the higher spend.

  5. Improved tracking: Advanced call tracking, CRM integration, and dynamic UTM parameters mean that marketers can track a lead from the initial click to the final settlement check. This granular data improves bidding confidence, since the firm can monitor exactly what a lead is worth to their bottom line.
It is worth noting that while the top legal keywords are expensive, CPC across the industry dropped 2.93% from 2023 to 2024, according to Wordstream’s findings. One theory is that high interest rates disincentivize advertisers from aggressively promoting and outbidding each other.

We also noticed a significant downtrend in volume for these keywords. 81% of keywords experienced negative YoY change, with 34% of them experiencing major decline (>50% drop). The median YoY change was -64% across all top 100 keywords.

One way to explain this is that search patterns are changing to long tail keywords, perhaps influenced by AI-powered search, so hyperspecific queries are replacing shorter tail keywords.

The top legal keywords are a target for click fraud

Our click fraud data shows that advertisers lost $84 Billion in 2023 to ad fraud, with that number projected to hit $172 Billion by 2028. But, these losses aren’t distributed evenly across every industry because the higher advertisers pay per click, the more the potential loses.

And with the average invalid click rate for Google Ads being 11.5%, marketers in the legal industry stand to lose about $11,500 for every $100,000 spent on advertising.

Let’s break down why fraudsters are drawn to legal keywords.

1. Competitors can drain your budget

Competitors often click on each other’s ads to intentionally exhaust their daily budget. Once the budget is “drained” by these illegitimate clicks, the victim’s ads stop appearing, wasting their ad spend and allowing the competitor’s ads to dominate the search results for the remainder of the day at a lower cost.

This strategy is called competitor clicks, and is one of the major types of click fraud.

Another, equally expensive scenario is when competitors click on ads to research landing page and intake flow. While this seems like harmless “research,” at $500+ per click, it can get expensive very quickly as firms pay for leads that will never convert.

2. High ROI for bad actors

Because legal CPCs are among the highest, bad actors can cause damage to campaigns, and make a lot of money with very little effort. A bot programmed to click just 10 times on a high-value truck accident ad can siphon away $6,000 (at $600 per click) of ad spend in minutes.

On the Display Network, this becomes even more pronounced when your ads appear on MFA (Made for Advertising) websites. Fraudsters create these low-quality sites specifically to host ads, then use bots or click farms to generate fake clicks. They get paid for every click, whether or not it’s from real users.

3. Click fraud is easier than ever

Fraud as a Service, click farms, and even sophisticated bots means that bad actors can access fraud tools fairly easily. These methods can easily bypass CAPTCHAs, and even basic defense of advertising platforms to wreak havoc on campaigns.

How to protect your legal ad budget

With individual clicks for terms like “tractor trailer accident attorney near me” costing $600+, there is zero margin for error. Every dollar of your ad spend should be protected from bots and competitor sabotage.

And while Google has internal filters to catch “invalid traffic,” they often miss sophisticated bot patterns and manual competitor clicks.

Here are the specific steps you can take to protect your budget:

Audit your location settings

By default, Google often targets “Presence or Interest.” For local law firms, this means people in other countries interested in your city could be clicking your ads. Change your settings to “Presence” only to ensure your $600 clicks are coming from people actually located in your jurisdiction.

Aggressively use Negative Keywords

Regularly review your search terms report to identify irrelevant queries. For example, if you are a high-end personal injury firm, you should exclude terms like “free,” “pro bono,” or “cheap” to avoid paying for leads that will never convert into profitable cases. See our list of negative keywords for reference on which keywords to exclude.

Disable Search Partners & Display Network

Many click farms and low-quality bot networks operate through Google’s “Search Partners” and the “Display Network”. For high-CPC legal keywords, it is often safer to stick strictly to Google Search to maintain lead quality and avoid scammy websites.

Use “Honeypots” on lead forms

Add a hidden field to your contact forms that is invisible to humans but can be seen by bots. If that field is filled out, you know the lead is fraudulent and can block that source immediately.

Use real-time click fraud protection

It’s almost impossible to manually monitor your campaigns when clicks happen in milliseconds.  But you can use real-time fraud protection software to identify suspicious IP addresses and bot signatures in real-time, automatically adding them to your Google Ads exclusion list before they can click again. This ensures that your budget is reserved for real, high-value claimants.

Protect your legal campaigns with Fraud Blocker

In PPC campaigns, every click matters. But when you’re paying $600+ per click, a few clicks from low quality leads can become very expensive very quickly.

Fraud Blocker monitors every click on your legal campaigns, identifying and blocking fraudulent traffic before it drains your budget. Our system detects competitor click patterns, bot signatures, click farms, and clicks outside your target location.

Once identified, these users and bots are added to your Google Ads exclusion list, preventing them from clicking again.

Methodology

† Keyword lists and cost-per-click (CPC) data for the top 100 keywords were sourced from Google Keyword Planner as of February 2026. We analyzed over 5,000 legal keywords and selected the top 100 based on search volume and CPC competitiveness, filtering out duplicates with identical metrics (e.g., “motorcycle accident lawyer” vs. “motorcycle accident attorney”).

Google Keyword Planner provides two CPC values for each keyword: a high range representing the maximum advertisers might pay per click, and a low range , likely representing typical bid amounts. Our analysis uses only the low range CPC because nearly half of the top legal keywords show a high range of $1,000. While individual law firms may occasionally pay $1,000 for high-value clicks, it’s unlikely that dozens of keywords consistently command this price point. The low range provides a more realistic estimate of actual advertiser spending.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most expensive legal keywords are high settlement value keywords related to heavy trucks and oilfields, like “oilfield injury lawyers” ($620 CPC), “tractor trailer accident law firm” ($500 CPC), and “bus crash lawyer” ($329 CPC).

Other accident and injury related keywords are also quite expensive, like “maritime accident attorney” ($266 CPC), “lyft car accident lawyer” ($250 CPC).

Our research indicates that roughly 22% of all ad spend is lost to fraud. In a high-CPC environment, this means a firm spending $10,000 a month could be losing over $2,000 to bots, competitors, or accidental clicks.
